I still can't believe how many emails piled up over the last three weeks while I was away. Would you believe 1500? Not that I am that popular: most of the messages were junk... from discounts on all my pharmaceutical needs (Viagra seems to top the list), and Rolex watches for "next to nothing",  to offers from "dying" strangers who have suddenly decided to leave me their fortune (all I need to do is send some money for "administration" costs).
Nevertheless, thanks for your emails. With these, I have also included a few job offers for those in radio and television (section: Opportunities), and included the usual health news bits with some new health resources you may find useful for health research and reporting.
Keep sending in whatever you think might assist or be of interest to your colleagues on our network, and I hope to hear from you soon.
take care,
Colin Lloyd,

I was part of this historic broadcast agreement
Rebecca Mngodo, Programmes Coordinator, ITV, Tanzania
In your recent update I was very much touched by the story, "The New Africa-wide HIV Broadcasting Initiatives"
I was among the CEOs who signed and formed an historic coalition of broadcasting companies with the purpose of increasing the effectiveness of broadcast media's contribution to the fight against HIV/AIDS.
The broadcast leaders concluded that broadcast media has a pivotal role to play in helping turn the tide of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Africa and resolve to redouble their efforts.
Our first programme, a public service announcement, will be aired on 1st December.
Congratulations once again, Colin, for the brilliant work you are doing... regards, Rebecca

Kenya gets in heated debate over using DDT
Mary Daraja, Radio producer, Kenya Broadcasting Corp
The re-introduction of DDT in the fight against malaria has elicited heated debate in Kenya (reference: listserv 24 September, 2006). The government is yet to make public its stand on the matter while the ministry of health is considering all the available options in malaria control following the lift on the use DDT.
A fresh anti-malaria campaign has been launched with the Kenyan government moving toward a more effective, and more expensive, Artemisinine Combination Therapy as an effective malaria treatment. They will also be distributing free mosquito nets in malaria prone areas.
