"You Invent it. We fund it...."
...to the tune of $5 million...
The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation is looking to reward new media ideas that aim to improve news and information in local communities.

And, according to their website, this competition is open to nonprofits, companies or individuals of any age and anywhere in the world. That means you are eligible, so, have a look at their site for more information, and start getting creative.

How about a free software programme that can take your station into cyberspace? Perhaps you are looking for a job in the US, UK, or, even, Afghanistan; or an audio guide for journalists on HIV/AIDS... maybe you are looking for a journalists guide to Bioterrorism... well, look no further, its all here - somewhere... just scroll down!

Listserv member, Sachia Ngutsav, from Radio Benue, in Nigeria, wrote, asking why I would not disclose more information about our listserv members. In the last email I had sent to everyone, I did not mention names or designations, nor did I give out any email addresses.

Seeing as this is a network or likeminded individuals, I think it would be a good idea to mention names and designations, but, emails are a more delicate matter. Most emails groups have a privacy policy ensuring that a member's email address will not be passed on without specific consent. Sometimes, lists of this kind end up in the wrong hands and before you know it, you are getting yet more offers of Viagra, and more relatives of ousted former dictators are offering you 25% of a multimillion dollar inheritance (if only you would pass along 10 thousand for admin fees and you bank account details...etc., etc..).

With this, I am preparing a more detailed list of our Health and Media listserv members including names and designations. If you want to contact anyone on the list, send it to me and I will forward the message. Therefore, the recipient can reply directly. If you do not want you name on the list, let me know asap.

Welcome new listserv member, Helen Mwihoreze, a reporter from Kigali,  who writes: "I'm a 25 year old female Rwandan journalist (diploma in mass communication) working at the Focus Newspaper in Kigali, Rwanda."

Reminder from Gambian radio producer
Mama Janneh, Producer, Gambia Radio and Television Services [currently in the UK]
"Hello everyone, The summer is here and days are getting hotter by the minute. At this point in time, even though i am not in my country, I am aware of the fact that the rainy season is fast approaching and this is quiet a perfect time for mosquitoes to start breeding,

I hope that anyone who may be in this situation is well prepared for action - i.e.: to prepare insecticide treated mosquito nets and and other effective methods available. Most significantly, for the health journalist, let's do our part in the area of sensitization.. I hope this makes sense wherever you may be. Until then, have a blissful summer.
